- Apple Announces New Family of Powerful Display Cards
-
- SAN JOSE, California--March 19, 1990--Today, Apple Computer, Inc. raised the
- standard of what people can do with graphics on a personal computer by
- announcing a new family of powerful display cards for the Macintosh. The
- Macintosh Display Card 4.8 is a basic video card that supports a wide range of
- graphics capabilities on all modular Macintosh computers. The Macintosh
- Display Card 8.24 is an extended version of the 4.8 card and offers even
- greater graphics capabilities, including photo-quality color. The Macintosh
- Display Card 8.24 GC is a high-performance, graphics coprocessor and video card
- that accelerates (up to 30 times faster) the responsiveness of all Macintosh
- applications--especially graphics-intensive ones. Taken together, these three
- new display cards give Macintosh users a broader and higher range of graphics
- capabilities: easier access to high-resolution color, improved image quality
- and performance, and greater graphics extensibility.
-
- "With the introduction of this family of display cards, we've opened up
- exciting new possibilities for graphics on the Macintosh," said Randy Battat,
- vice president of Apple Worldwide Product Marketing. "People will now have
- access to millions of colors and tighter interaction with images. As a result,
- current applications will be more vivid and responsive and people will be even
- more spontaneous and creative with the Macintosh. We also believe these
- capabilities will invite users to explore even more powerful and innovative
- ways of using our computers."
-
- The Macintosh Display Card 4.8, Macintosh Display Card 8.24 and Macintosh
- Display Card 8.24 GC all adhere to a common set of design features. They are
- all standard NuBus cards that work transparently with all modular Macintosh
- computers (II, IIx, IIcx, IIci and IIfx). They support all Apple monitors.
- Each card is self-configuring and automatically works with any Apple monitor
- attached to the system. They are all compatible with interlaced devices such
- as televisions and video recorders. All three cards support thousands of
- Macintosh applications.
-
- This consistency across the card family makes it simpler for people to choose
- the card that best fits their needs, regardless of system or monitor
- configuration. It also makes it easier for people to upgrade their graphics
- capabilities as their needs change.
-
- Macintosh Display Card 4.8
- The Macintosh Display Card 4.8 is a versatile video card that supports a wide
- range of monitors and graphics capabilities. As its name implies, it displays
- images in either 4-bit mode (16 grays/colors) or 8-bit mode (256 grays/colors),
- depending on the monitor. The 4.8 provides the following capabilities on the
- following monitors:
- - 256 grays or colors on the AppleColor High-Resolution RGB Monitor
- - 256 grays (true gray scale) on the Apple High-Resolution Monochrome Monitor
- - 16 grays on the Apple Macintosh Portrait Display or Apple Two-Page Monochrome
- Monitor
-
- As the basic member of this new card family, the 4.8 card provides a flexible
- and affordable foundation for users with simpler graphics needs. At the same
- time, it provides users with an easy upgrade path to more advanced graphics
- capabilities. The Macintosh Display Card VRAM Kit, also announced today, gives
- the 4.8 card the additional capabilities of support for true color and true
- gray scale, as found on the Macintosh Display Card 8.24.
-
- Macintosh Display Card 8.24
- The Macintosh Display Card 8.24 is Apple's first card that makes brilliant,
- photo-quality color available to all modular Macintosh users. It extends the
- 4.8 card's capabilities to display 24-bit true color, as well as full 256-level
- gray scale. The 8.24 card supports the full capabilities of the following
- monitors:
- - 24-bit true color (16.7 million colors) on the AppleColor High-Resolution RGB
- Monitor
- - 256 grays (true gray scale) on the Apple High-Resolution Monochrome Monitor,
- Apple Macintosh Portrait Display or Apple Two-Page Monochrome Monitor
-
- Additionally, the 8.24 card supports Apple Convolution, a process that provides
- flicker-free images on interlaced devices such as televisions and video
- recorders. This capability makes Macintosh-created graphics appear smoother on
- interlaced devices, allowing easy integration of high-quality images with other
- media.
-
- By allowing users to easily integrate true color and true gray scale into a
- wide range of applications, Apple believes that everything people do on the
- Macintosh will become more compelling and creative. True color and true gray
- scale on the Macintosh offer users superior image quality as well as a new
- degree of precision and authenticity in activities as diverse as word
- processing, desktop publishing, animating, creating presentations, medical
- imaging, and design and modeling.
-
- The Macintosh Display Card 8.24 GC
- The Macintosh Display Card 8.24 GC incorporates all the standard features of
- the 8.24 card and boosts graphics performance up to 30 times. This increase in
- speed derives from the careful integration of a number of new technologies and
- processes in the card:
- - Fast coprocessor: The GC card accelerates all graphics routines through the
- use of a dedicated Am29000 RISC processor running at 30 MHz. This component
- shares graphics processing responsibilities with the Macintosh system's
- processor. This shared processing enables the main processor to work on other
- tasks while the graphics coprocessor quickly executes graphics commands.
- - QuickDraw Acceleration: The GC card accelerates all applications and
- operations that use QuickDraw, the imaging model that generates the Macintosh
- graphics display. The GC card comes with a single software file that contains
- a version of QuickDraw optimized for a coprocessed environment, thereby
- increasing graphics performance and accelerating the entire imaging model.
- Enhancing all aspects of QuickDraw provides users with increased performance
- across a broad range of uses--from moving windows and redrawing pictures to
- scrolling and scaling images.
-
- The GC card can be upgraded in two ways. First, the Macintosh Display Card
- DRAM Kit, also announced today, can upgrade the card to up to 2MB of on-board
- DRAM. This increase in memory can greatly improve the performance of
- animations, presentations or any applications that manipulate complex images.
- Additionally, the GC card will be able to incorporate new graphics innovations
- as they become available. Because the Am29000 processor is initialized through
- a QuickDraw software file, the GC card will be able to take advantage of future
- QuickDraw enhancements simply by replacing the file.
-
- System Requirements
- Apple believes that this new level of graphics performance offered by the
- Macintosh Display Card 8.24 GC will greatly increase the interactive nature of
- all Macintosh applications. Word processing documents which incorporate 24-bit
- color images can be as fast as those incorporating simple black-and-white
- images. Lengthy and detailed presentations and animations will become easier
- to create and modify, and complex renderings will be more responsive and
- accessible. As a result, people will be able to achieve new levels of quality
- and creativity in all the work they do.
-
- Pricing and Availability
- Apple recommends that the Macintosh Display Cards be used with System Software
- 6.0.5 or greater. Two megabytes of memory is suggested when using the 8.24
- card or 8.24 GC card to take full advantage of 24-bit color.
-
- All cards will be available worldwide through Apple authorized resellers.
- Suggested U.S. retail price and availability for each card is as follows:
- - Macintosh Display Card 4.8, available summer, $648
- - Macintosh Display Card 8.24, available immediately, $899
- - Macintosh Display Card 8.24 GC, available summer, $1,999
